Sandbalsting
I do the sandbalsting myself. Sandblasted baff? pipes are not of minor quality to smooth ones, because I do not blast pipes because of inferior quality (loose grain, spots).

I have a different approach: I pick pieces of briar with very nice grain, because only high quality grain will produce a high quality blast. The whole plateau is then blasted for a short time to see if the piece has the potential for a very good blast. So sandblasted baff? pipes are designed from the beginning for that process.

Sandblasted pipes without stain show the quality of the briar at one glance. But of course dark sandblasted or rusticated pipes do not have any wood putty.
